Shannon Shelton

In today's society, anyone can go to college or continue their education, but will everyone be able to succeed? What is it that distinguishes the successful students from the others? It is simply the internal drive to succeed that every good student possesses. They are determined to better their lives as well as the lives of others; therefore, this makes them dedicated, hardworking, responsible, dependable, and intelligent. But the one thing that triggers it all, is the fact that someone who wishes to progress always thinks about the plans for the future. One cannot just live for today, without preparing for the future. In order to get ahead, one must think ahead. This is where my job takes place. I am the person that pushes and prepares students for the future. I believe teachers, advisors, counselors all have a special gift of reaching beyond a child’s mind and helping their soul reach for success. Teaching and advising is not just about teaching books and procedures, but teaching and preparing for what is beyond life’s limit.

All in all, this is a very exciting time for everyone. Greetings, I am Shannon Shelton and I have the esteem pleasure of becoming Sumner Academy’s College and Career Coordinator.  I am truly excited about joining such a wonderful family and team! I am originally from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where I attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and received a degree in Business Education. Immediately after graduation, I moved to Overland Park, Kansas and taught high school business courses in Kansas City, Missouri and Independence, Missouri. While teaching, I was also able to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City to obtain a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. My family and I have relocated back to Kansas City after moving to Blytheville, Arkansas. While in Arkansas, I served as an Educational Advisor for four school districts. My role was to assist 6th-12th grade students in preparing them for post-secondary education. Therefore, you can only imagine the joy that is in my heart to fulfill such a wonderful role at Sumner Academy.

Most importantly, I cannot wait to help students be the best student he or she can possibly be! Thank you for having me as your Career and College Coordinator. Here’s to a great school year.
