I am Karl Gibson

I am Karl Gibson. I was born and raised in Kansas City, KS.  I attended and graduated from Turner High School. I attended the University of Kansas on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship.  I graduated with a BS in Biology & minor in Chemistry and then served as a Chemical Officer in the US Army. After my honorable service, I was hired by the US Army to establish and run the Industrial Hygiene program on Fort Leavenworth. I was responsible to eliminate or control workplace hazards to prevent illness or injury for soldiers, inmates, and civilians, characterize workplace exposure hazards to collaborate exposure-based medical surveillance, have performed training sections for workers and supervisors, and comply with OSHA, EPA, state and DOD laws and regulations. After about 20 years, I looked for a second career. I liked teaching classes in the Army and as a den leader/cub master, assistant scout master, and scout master. I am an Eagle Scout, as well as, both of my sons - Paul and Seth. I am a single parent.

I spent the 2009-10 school year as a full time pre-K to 12 Substitute Teacher for all grades and all subjects in Lansing, Leavenworth, Piper, and Turner districts. I was hired in August 2010 to January 2015 as an Instructional Aide and Long-term Substitute Teacher at Patton Jr. High School, Fort Leavenworth. During this period, I took night/online education classes with KCKCC to obtain an Associates in Secondary Education.  I followed this by obtaining my Masters in Education and Teacher license from the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth on May 9, 2015. I have been teaching at Sumner Academy since August 2015.

I believe that education is the key to success for all students.  I have been very successful at accommodating diverse student needs by facilitating all styles of learning, offering individualized and extracurricular support, and integrating effective hands-on activities and lessons. My strengths include inspiring and motivating students. I actively engage their eager minds by incorporating a variety of manipulatives, enjoyable activities, and cooperative learning projects. Being a hard-working and well-rounded educator, I welcome the opportunity to teach your student.
